I would say a must is "At Last" by Etta James, it's such a romantic song! I also think "Celebration" by Kool and the Gang is a really fun song, but I've had some people disagree with me on that one. YMCA is one of those songs that everyone knows how to dance to, so I would also recommend that one. As far as songs to avoid, the usuals are The Chicken Dance and The Macarena.
